Lawrence Group New York Celebrating 30 Years of Design Excellence
NEW YORK – Lawrence Group’s New York office is celebrating its 30th anniversary this month. Since opening in Midtown Manhattan in 1996, the office has built a nationally recognized practice, creating thoughtful design solutions for leading brands across the United States and Canada.

Headquartered in St. Louis, Lawrence Group was founded in 1983 by partners Steve Smith, David Ohlemeyer and Paul Doerner who met as architecture students at the University of Kansas.
As the firm grew through the 1980s and 1990s, it opened its second office in New York in 1996, establishing a presence in one of the world’s leading centers for architecture, design, retail and culture. Lekometros, a graduate of Syracuse University’s School of Architecture, was chosen to lead the new office.
As Managing Principal, Lekometros founded the New York office with the focused objective of providing each individual client with exemplary design solutions and comprehensive services. Operating as part of Lawrence Group’s network of offices, which today includes locations in Texas and Florida, Lawrence Group’s New York office operates with the flexibility and responsiveness of a small office, combined with the depth of resources of a large firm.

After 30 years as Managing Principal, Lekometros has transitioned to Principal and Director of Design where he will continue working closely with clients to tell their stories through design while cultivating relationships with new client prospects.
Principal Rob Gatzke, AIA, NCARB was recently named the office’s new Managing Principal; Gatzke joined Lawrence Group’s New York office in April 2025. A seasoned leader known for inspiring teams, fostering collaboration, and consistently delivering exceptional results for clients, Gatzke brings deep expertise across a broad range of project types, with particular emphasis on boutique hospitality, retail, corporate interiors, and adaptive reuse. He excels at building strong, lasting relationships with clients, ensuring their goals are understood and achieved throughout every phase of a project.
