Tim Hoekenga named Chief Operating Officer; Neal Curran appointed Executive Director of Innovation & Product Development
Cleveland, OH – Nexus Engineering Group, a full-service independent engineering, procurement, and construction management (EPCm) firm headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, has announced two executive leadership appointments designed to strengthen the organization and advance the development of innovative solutions for clients.
Tim Hoekenga has been named Chief Operating Officer, and Neal Curran, who served as Nexus’ Chief Operating Officer for more than 20 years, has been appointed Executive Director of Innovation & Product Development. Together, the appointments position Nexus to strengthen its corporate operations while dedicating experienced leadership to the creation of proprietary technologies, products, and new client offerings.
“Tim and Neal bring distinct but complementary strengths to their new positions,” says Jeff Herzog, Co-Founder and President. “Tim understands our business from the inside out and has consistently demonstrated an ability to improve how we work, develop our team members, and bring people together around a common goal. Neal has always challenged conventional approaches and looked for creative ways to solve complex problems. Their leadership will help Nexus continue evolving while creating greater value for our clients.”
Hoekenga Named Chief Operating Officer
As Chief Operating Officer, Hoekenga will provide strategic leadership and oversight for the firm’s corporate operations, including human resources, talent acquisition, technology, accounting and finance, and other key functions that support Nexus’ business, engineering, and project delivery teams. Working closely with the executive leadership team, he will help strengthen the systems, processes, and organizational capabilities needed to support the company’s long-term success.
A key priority will be ensuring Nexus has the experienced professionals and organizational capacity needed to meet changing client needs, particularly within the growing power and energy market. Hoekenga will also help the company embrace emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, and evaluate new tools that improve collaboration, efficiency, and decision-making.
“Tim brings a unique combination of technical knowledge, business acumen, and leadership experience to this role,” says Herzog. “As our industry continues to evolve, he will play a critical role in helping Nexus strengthen its capabilities, support our team members, and position the firm for the future.”
Hoekenga brings more than two decades of strategic leadership experience in the engineering and power industries. He has led multidisciplinary teams, supported major capital projects, and developed approaches that improve collaboration, execution, and business performance. In addition to his engineering and project leadership experience, he earned an MBA from Case Western Reserve University and has led process improvement, organizational development, and strategic initiatives throughout his career.
“I am honored to take on this role and continue serving a company that has always prioritized its people and clients,” says Hoekenga. “Nexus has an outstanding team, a strong culture, and tremendous opportunities ahead. I look forward to helping our team members thrive and ensuring we have the talent, technology, and capabilities needed to deliver exceptional value for our clients.”
Curran to Lead Innovation and Product Development
After playing a central role in shaping Nexus from its earliest years, Curran will now focus on identifying opportunities for engineering innovation, supporting the development of intellectual property, and transforming ideas into practical solutions that create value for clients and strengthen Nexus’ competitive position.
As Executive Director of Innovation & Product Development, Curran will work across the organization to identify emerging client needs, develop proprietary solutions, support patentable technologies, and evaluate opportunities for new offerings. He will collaborate with engineering, project delivery, and business leaders to transform ideas into applications that improve safety, efficiency, reliability, and performance across Nexus’ core markets.
“Neal has always been one of the most innovative thinkers in our organization,” says Herzog. “Throughout his career, he has developed creative solutions to complex problems and continually looked for ways to improve how we serve our clients. This new role allows him to focus that energy on engineering service development, proprietary technologies, and capabilities that can support the future of Nexus and the industries we serve.”
Curran has been instrumental in building the systems, processes, and culture that support Nexus today. His technical expertise, entrepreneurial mindset, and commitment to continuous improvement have contributed to innovations that have enhanced project execution and client outcomes. In his new role, he will apply those strengths to differentiated solutions designed to address evolving industry challenges.
“Innovation has always been one of the most exciting parts of what we do,” says Curran. “Every challenge presents an opportunity to develop a better solution. I’m excited to focus on identifying new ideas, advancing technologies and services, and helping Nexus create innovative offerings that bring lasting value to our clients.”
Together, the appointments reflect Nexus’ commitment to investing in the leadership, talent, systems, and differentiated solutions that will shape the firm’s future. By strengthening its corporate functions and dedicating experienced engineering leadership to product development, Nexus is positioning the organization to meet evolving client needs and bring new value to the markets it serves.
