City of Virginia consolidates emergency services response with new, collaborative Public Safety Facility designed by Wold

VIRGINIA, MINN.Wold Architects and Engineers (Wold), a national architecture and engineering firm with deep expertise in public safety design, has completed a new Public Safety Facility in the city of Virginia. It unites the city’s fire, police, emergency medical services and search and rescue operations under one roof. The modern facility replaces century-old buildings and is designed to meet future demands of emergency response, community safety and state sustainability standards.

The project reflects the city’s long-term vision to invest in efficient, adaptable infrastructure that supports first responders and serves residents across 600 square miles of the Iron Range. The new 50,000 square-foot hub strengthens coordination and collaboration between all of the area’s public safety services with shared spaces for public access, fitness and training. It also features dedicated decontamination areas and modern vehicle bays, in addition to a training tower and on-site hydrant to expand opportunities for hands-on emergency response training.

“The new Public Safety Facility brings together people, purpose and place. We aimed to design a space that gives these critical teams the tools they need that, in turn, allow them to focus on the job,” said John McNamara, government practice leader at Wold. “By combining multiple departments into one purpose-built, sustainable environment, the City of Virginia has created a model for collaboration and impact that improves access to public services for rural communities.”

Designed to meet Minnesota B3 sustainability guidelines, the facility incorporates energy-efficient systems, an extensive solar array and daylight harvesting. Its redevelopment of a brownfield site further reflects the city’s commitment to environmental stewardship. Police Chief Nicole Mattson commented, “This building is not just a replacement, but an investment. It will solidify Virginia as a regional hub for the safety and well-being of the community.”

Two decades in the making, the impactful facility’s design was influenced by community surveys that indicated 70% of Virginia’s citizens agreed a new facility was needed for public safety services. Developed in close partnership with city leaders and public safety officials, Wold guided the design process that aligned with state requirements and the USDA loan, and assisted the city with other grants that allowed them to fund a facility that will serve the city for many decades to come.

By consolidating the region’s emergency response teams, the new Public Safety Facility thoughtfully responds to the public’s call for a modernized resource that will serve the rural community for years to come. It is located at 1004 S 2nd Ave W, Virginia, MN 55792.
