Project Spotlights Innovative One-of-a-Kind Structural System WASHINGTON — raSmith of Brookfield, Wisc. has earned a National Recognition Award for exemplary engineering achievement in the American Council of Engineering Companies’ (ACEC) 59 th  annual Engineering Excellence Awards (EEA). The award comes for the firm’s role in the renovation of the Kohl Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. raSmith provided structural engineering services for the transformative $46-million expansion and renovation project, which features a 55,000-sq-ft, three-story addition constructed directly above the existing southwest loading dock, an area critical to daily operations. To support this elevated structure without disrupting dock access, the design team used four 120-ft-long plate girders, some reaching depths of eight to nine feet. These plate girders span the dock without vertical supports, preserving critical access while supporting a high-performance training facility above.  ...

Telle announced a major initiative, “Building Infrastructure, Not Paperwork,” for the Army’s Civil Works program. “Building Infrastructure, Not Paperwork” will provide greater focus on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ (USACE) core Civil Works missions while minimizing non-core programs, direct funding to priority water resources projects that will provide the greatest benefits to the nation, shorten permitting timelines, and reduce or eliminate extraneous regulations and paperwork that slow USACE’s delivery of Civil Works projects and programs.
