Wold Architects & Engineers Completes Transformative Healthcare Expansion at WinnMed
The completion of a new outpatient center marks the latest milestone in a longstanding partnership and a comprehensive vision for the future of care
Decorah, Iowa – Wold Architects & Engineers, a full-service planning, architecture and engineering firm specializing in healthcare, senior living, education and government design, is celebrating the completion of a multiphase expansion and renovation project at WinnMed in Decorah, Iowa. The project includes a new 42,000-square-foot outpatient center, the final major phase of WinnMed’s Transforming Tomorrow project, a transformative effort to advance care across the campus.
The completion of the outpatient center is the latest milestone in Wold’s longstanding partnership with WinnMed, which began with the development of a comprehensive master facilities plan. As the organization adapted to evolving community needs and lessons learned following the COVID-19 pandemic, the master plan evolved alongside it, creating a roadmap for a more flexible and efficient campus that supports the future of healthcare delivery. With the previous expansion of the surgery center and renovation of the mother-baby unit, the three phases represent a comprehensive investment in the campus, all designed to improve patient access, streamline care delivery and support the health system’s long-term vision for serving the community.
“Our partnership with WinnMed has been grounded in a shared commitment to creating spaces that elevate the patient experience, support caregivers and position the organization for the future,” said Rachel Hendrickson, healthcare practice leader at Wold. “Through an intensive planning process and close collaboration with hospital leadership, providers and frontline staff, we were able to translate the way care is delivered today into environments that are both purposeful and adaptable.”
The campus transformation was designed through a collaborative Lean 3P planning process. The expanded surgery center provides additional capacity and improved surgical environments to support WinnMed’s growing surgical services, while the reconfigured and renovated mother-baby unit creates an updated, comfortable environment that supports families and care teams throughout the childbirth experience. Building upon the success of earlier improvements, the new outpatient center reimagines the arrival and care experience with flexible clinical spaces, technology-driven registration and scheduling, sustainable building systems and materials and a patient-centered layout.
“Wold worked hard to ensure we were building the right project, not simply moving forward with what was originally planned,” said Steve Slessor, chief administrative officer at WinnMed. “During the design phase, Wold recommended significant changes that ultimately transformed our clinic expansion for the better. It would have been easy to stay the course, but the team took the time to understand what we really needed and had the expertise to challenge the original direction. Those recommendations brought tremendous value to the project and, ultimately, to our entire campus.”
Completed in three phases to minimize disruptions to hospital operations, the renovated mother-baby unit opened in January, followed by the expanded surgery center in May and the completion of the new outpatient center.
