R.D. Olson Construction Begins Third Phase of Revitalization at Howard Johnson Anaheim Resort & Water Playground
The latest phase revamps 93 rooms and exterior spaces at a property R.D. Olson helped transform since 2018
AUGUST – ANAHEIM, CA – R.D. Olson Construction has begun the third phase of renovations and new construction at Howard Johnson Anaheim Hotel and Water Playground, continuing a decade-long relationship with one of Southern California’s most active hospitality markets, which is minutes away from Disneyland Park. This project is part of the “HoJo Anaheim Reimagined” initiative, which is transforming the property into a walkable California Garden Resort and transportive oasis that can’t be replicated anywhere else within the Anaheim Resort district.
“Construction on a hotel doesn’t stop when a hotel is first completed – it keeps going to ensure all guests’ needs are accounted for,” said Bill Wilhelm, CEO and President of R.D. Olson Construction. “This is our third phase of renovations and upgrades for the Howard Johnson Anaheim Hotel & Water Playground, solidifying an eight-year relationship with the property. We have also worked within the Anaheim Resort district for over a decade, completing projects at eight hotels, including the Courtyard by Marriott.”
The third phase of upgrades at Anaheim Resort & Water Playground will deliver an immersive environment where midcentury architecture, refreshing water elements, and bold layered landscaping come together to create an unforgettable experience. A core feature of the renovation will consist of refurbishing 93 rooms out of the 302-key property. Four buildings will be reconstructed with each room incorporating a refreshed California modern aesthetic inspired by the property’s midcentury roots. The rooms are also being constructed to have more spacious layouts with 10 being transformed into one-bedroom suites, offering a new higher-end room type that is in demand.
Part of HoJo Reimagined initiative includes reimagining the property’s bridges and walkways across the hotel to curate a guest journey that fosters seamless connection and lush landscape. R.D. Olson is building four bridges and walkways across the new buildings to provide easier access across the seven-acre property. They are also demolishing and rebuilding the hotel’s courtyard to infuse greener landscapes along with a new fountain and swing to enhance the water-immersive experience at the resort.
Additional refinements and upgraded equipment will be incorporated within the Howard Johnson property. This includes a new elevator that will serve the four new buildings along with translucent panels, multi-colored concrete, and terrazzo-style finishes infused throughout the resort to enhance its vibrancy within the Anaheim Resort district.
Building on its strong partnership, R.D. Olson and the resort will be working closely to prioritize guest comfort and minimize disruption over the next year, as the hotel remains fully operational. Prior to this phase, R.D. Olson completed two previous renovations at the Howard Johnson Anaheim Hotel and Water Playground, which included the rebuilding of 100+ rooms and extensive modernizations.
“We are grateful to continue working with R.D. Olson on this next phase of upgrades,” said Matt Stanley, General Manager at Howard Johnson Anaheim Hotel and Water Playground. “They have an unparalleled understanding of evolving guests needs and have been an integral part in executing the HoJo Reimagined vision.”
R.D. Olson has a robust portfolio of hospitality projects across California. The general contractor recently completed AC Hotel Pasadena and Appellation Healdsburg.
Howard Johnson Anaheim Resort and Water Playground is located at 1380 S Harbor Blvd, Anaheim, CA 92802.
