Pittsburgh’s Commercial Street Bridge Replaced in Under 24 Hours

Installation technique minimizes disruption for road-going public When replacing an old bridge with new, time is always a critical factor – especially if the crossing serves as a main route in and out of a busy city.  The original Pittsburgh Commercial Street bridge went into construction in 1948 and was completed in 1951. Today, it is used by more than 100,000 vehicles every day. The concrete bridge went through three rehabilitations in its life, during 1980, 2006 and 2012 – but eventually needed to be replaced with a new structure that could carry permit loads.   This major infrastructure project utilized Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) techniques. The replacement span was built beside the old bridge over a period of months, and then laterally slid into position immediately after the old bridge was demolished. UWF and NWFSC Expand Engineering Pathways with Four New Transfer Degree Programs

Pensacola, Fla. –  The University of West Florida and Northwest Florida State College are expanding opportunities for students to pursue engineering careers in Northwest Florida through four new Specialized Associate in Arts Transfer, or SAAT, degree pathways that create a seamless route from associate-level coursework at NWFSC to bachelor’s degree completion through UWF. Approved by the Florida State Board of Education during its July 22 meeting in Orlando, the new pathways allow students to begin their engineering education at NWFSC’s Niceville campus and continue into UWF’s upper-division engineering programs at the joint NWFSC-UWF campus in Fort Walton Beach. Kennesaw State Univ. Wins PCI Design Precast

CHICAGO – The Kennesaw State University team of Ashely Borgman, Ines Konji, and Asma Nadir was the overall winner of the PCI Spring 2026 Design Precast competition. Their winning design, the Folded Frame contemporary art museum, embraces the site’s artistic and industrial identity by exploring how precast concrete can serve as an efficient building system and an expressive architectural language that shapes light, atmosphere, and human experience. In PCI Design Precast, teams of two or three students present their designs in the form of elevations and 3-D BIM modeling. Students are encouraged to work with a local Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI)-certified precast concrete producer to learn about design-assist, understand precast concrete production, and learn about the colors and textures needed to complete the design.
