Hennepin County Expands Judicial Capacity with New Hearing Spaces at Government Center
Project strengthens court operations, long-term flexibility and access to consolidated services
MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. — Wold Architects and Engineers (Wold), a national architecture and engineering firm with deep expertise in justice and civic design, has completed a major renovation and expansion project for the Fourth Judicial District and Hennepin County at the Hennepin County Government Center in downtown Minneapolis.
The Family Court Division was relocated from the Family Justice Center to the Government Center, bringing additional judicial operations into the county’s primary courthouse while creating a consolidated Self-Help Center for community members seeking court resources and assistance. The new spaces opened to the public in late March 2026.
Designed in close collaboration with Hennepin County and the Fourth Judicial District, the project included the construction of 15 new judicial hearing spaces tailored to support a broad range of proceedings. The expansion adds a diverse mix of courtroom and hearing room environments to the Government Center, including family hearing rooms, trial courtrooms and dedicated high-profile proceedings spaces equipped with media audio connections for approved broadcast and recording access.
A new centralized Self-Help Center and a new Family Court Administration office was also created, improving coordination between related court services previously housed in separate locations. The consolidated Self-Help Center supports court participants who cannot afford to hire professional legal representation and provides a more streamlined experience for individuals navigating the court system.
“Justice environments must balance accessibility, security, adaptability and the evolving operational realities of modern court systems,” said Joel Dunning, government practice leader at Wold. “This project reflects a thoughtful investment in long-term flexibility while creating spaces that better support day-to-day court operations, judicial staff and the public they serve.”
Most hearing spaces include enhanced audiovisual technology designed to support hybrid proceedings. The project also advances broader operational goals for Hennepin County and the Fourth Judicial District by reducing the number of facilities requiring security screening, strengthening collaboration among judicial partners and expanding the range of hearing environments available within the Government Center.
The renovated facility strengthens the Government Center’s role as a central hub for court operations while supporting the county’s long-term vision for accessible, future-ready judicial services. It is located at 300 South 6th St, Minneapolis, MN 55487.
