City of Shelbyville Celebrates Groundbreaking for New Community Soccer Complex
The City partnered with Wold Architects & Engineers to expand recreation opportunities and support long-term community growth
Shelbyville, Tenn. – The City of Shelbyville, in partnership with Wold Architects and Engineers (Wold), today announced the start of construction on Phase 1 of a $5M project to bring a multi-purpose soccer field complex to the region. On Friday afternoon, residents and project stakeholders joined local leaders for a groundbreaking ceremony on the 36-acre development to mark the major investment in the community’s recreational infrastructure, designed to support local athletics and future growth.
“This project represents an exciting investment in Shelbyville’s future,” said Trevor Freitas, parks and recreation department director for the City. “There’s already tremendous excitement from local families, athletes and residents about what this complex will bring to the community. Beyond expanding recreation opportunities, it will create a place where people can gather, compete and build lasting memories.”
The City selected Wold to provide grant administration, planning, design and construction administrative services for the project. The new complex expands HV Griffin Park with six regulation soccer fields, laser grading, irrigation and a 650-space parking lot. Its final design will include sports lighting, perimeter fencing, and an equipment storage facility. A concessions and restroom building with covered picnic area will provide additional amenities to enhance the experience for athletes, families and visitors.
Shelbyville Mayor Randy Carroll commented, “This project is a meaningful investment in the future of our youth and the continued growth of our community. The excitement surrounding today’s groundbreaking speaks volumes about what this complex will mean for Shelbyville as a recreational asset, a place that brings people together and a source of community pride.”
“We are proud to partner with the City of Shelbyville on a project that’s generated enthusiastic anticipation from the community,” said Jim Gilliam, government practice leader with Wold Architects & Engineers. “From the beginning, the vision was to create more than just athletic fields. It has been to design a destination that supports connection, local pride and long-term growth for Shelbyville families and visitors.”
Designed for long-term flexibility and community use, the complex reflects a coordinated approach to athletic facilities, infrastructure and growth planning. Other project partners include CDP Architecture and Studio Topography. The complex will ultimately be capable of supporting current recreational needs and future expansion. Construction is expected to continue through 2027.
