Critical Regional Infrastructure Complete at Coulsons Creek

Coulsons Creek Road Merriwa (MR358) has officially reopened to traffic following the successful completion of a major civil infrastructure upgrade delivered by Daracon Group.

The road officially re-opened on 7 April, with all levels of Government represented including NSW Minister for Roads, Jenny Aitchison, Federal Member for Hunter, Dan Repacholi MP, Federal Member for New England Hon. Barnaby Joyce MP, Federal Member for the Upper Hunter Dave Layzell MP and Upper Hunter Shire Mayor Maurice Collison in attendance.

Daracon Group commenced two years of complex construction in challenging environmental and geological conditions in February 2024, with final project activities completed in February 2026.

Michael Rummery, Divisional Manager Hunter Civil – Daracon Group, said the milestone represented a significant achievement for the project team.

“Reopening Coulsons Creek Road today was a major milestone and a credit to the dedication and professionalism of everyone involved,” said Mr Rummery.

Construction activities included extensive retaining structures such as gabion walls, the construction of road pavements and surfacing, stormwater reticulation and open drainage channels, rockfall protection systems incorporating soil nails and mesh, as well as safety barrier systems, signage and line marking.

“Daracon Group has demonstrated a high level of technical capability and collaboration in delivering this important upgrade for our region. Reopening Coulsons Creek Road marks an important step in restoring a key transport route and strengthening the resilience of our road network,” said Upper Hunter Shire Council Mayor Cr Maurice Collison.

This project was delivered for Upper Hunter Shire Council, with the backing of the Australian and NSW Governments to ensure this vital community connection could be re-opened after significant damage by heavy rainfall and landslides in 2021 shut this vital freight route in the region.

“The works required a high level of technical capability, particularly around slope stability, drainage and retaining structures. Operating in steep terrain with variable ground conditions meant adaptability was key throughout the delivery phase,” Mr Rummery said.

As construction progressed, it became clear that a full replacement of the existing Merriwa-end causeway would be required to ensure the longevity of the road for years to come.

“Through a coordinated and focused effort, our team delivered a new, wider causeway complete with Class 4 reinforced concrete pipes and full guardrail protection, allowing the road to reopen before Christmas,” said Mr Rummery.

“Coulsons Creek is a strong example of Daracon’s capability to deliver complex regional infrastructure projects under challenging conditions while maintaining high standards of safety and quality,” said Daracon Group’s Michael Rummery.

With the road now reopened to traffic, the project enters its final completion phase, marking the successful delivery of an important infrastructure upgrade for the Upper Hunter region.
