Leading New York-based general contracting firm Forte Construction Corp. has been honored with the first-ever Vito A. Guido Award at the 100th anniversary celebration of The Cooper Union Student Chapter of The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
The celebration brought together nearly 200 attendees, including construction industry professionals, alumni, faculty, and students, to honor a century of innovation, service, and community in civil engineering.
Created specifically for the centennial celebration, the Vito A. Guido Award is named for the late beloved professor at New York City’s The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, who was part of the school’s civil engineering faculty from 1979 until his passing in 2022. The award recognizes individuals and organizations that have meaningfully guided and mentored civil engineering students at The Cooper Union, reflecting the values and mentorship legacy Professor Guido instilled during his many years at the institution.
“Our strong alumni network and support offered to our students is a true testament to the lasting impact of The Cooper Union,” said Isaac W. K. Thweatt, Vice President, Alumni Affairs and Development of The Cooper Union. “Forte Construction has been a steadfast supporter of our school community through ASCE company presentations, meaningful internship opportunities, and the establishment of the Forte Construction Corp. Scholarship Fund”
Forte Construction President Larry Pappas, one of Professor Guido’s former students and mentees, accepted the award on behalf of Forte Construction in recognition of the company’s ongoing commitment to education and philanthropy.
“Professor Guido’s mentorship, guidance, and passion for teaching left an invaluable mark on all of his students, including myself” said Pappas, who graduated from The Cooper Union in 1998. “That is part of the reason why our company is committed to developing future generations of civil engineers through internship opportunities and our scholarship fund.”
In 2024, Forte announced the creation of a $100,000 Forte Construction Corp. Scholarship Fund to help educate students with a demonstrated interest in construction and/or construction management, playing a key role in the college’s continued ten-year plan to become fully tuition-free.
“I am deeply thankful to Forte Construction Corp. in making my pursuit to become a civil engineer possible,” said one Forte Construction Corp. Scholarship Fund recipient. “This generous donation not only alleviates the financial burden of attending this great institution but also allows me to achieve the significant milestone of becoming the first engineer in my family.”
