BARGE CIVIL ASSOCIATES ANNOUNCES LEADERSHIP PROMOTIONS TO SUPPORT LONG-TERM GROWTH

Anna Maddox and Ryan Woodson named principals, Matt Ellenberger named associate as BCA enters its 32ndyear in business in 2026

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Barge Civil Associates (BCA), a Nashville-based civil engineering firm specializing in site planning, design and land development, announces several key additions to its leadership team. Anna Maddox, P.E., and Ryan Woodson, P.E., CFM, are promoted to full partners, and Matt Ellenberger, P.E. is promoted to associate.

These promotions align with BCA’s long-term strategy to strengthen stability, ensure continuity, and support the development of future firm leaders. Maddox, Woodson and Ellenberger join principals John Gore, P.E., and Jeff Hooper, P.E., in guiding the firm’s continued growth, client service, and commitment to engineering excellence.

“Anna, Ryan and Matt have each played essential roles in our firm’s success, leading some of our most complex projects and strengthening our reputation for creative, collaborative, and community-minded design,” said Gore. “These promotions recognize their contributions and reflect our commitment to the next generation of leadership.”

Hooper noted, “We’re proud to see all three step into these roles. Adding them to our leadership team not only recognizes their individual achievements but also reinforces the continuity of our leadership culture – one built on collaboration, client trust, and solid relationships.” He added that BCA is also growing to meet increasing demand, recruiting additional licensed civil engineers in land planning and stormwater management, as well as graduate engineers and engineer interns, to support an expanding portfolio of higher-profile and large-scale work.

With more than two decades of experience – 18 of those with BCA – Maddox leads civil design for a variety of academic, civic, and commercial projects. Her education and academic projects include Vanderbilt University’s new Engineering & Science Building, the renovation of Middle Tennessee State University’s Kirksey Old Main and Rutledge Hall, and new buildings for MTSU’s School of Concrete and Construction Management, and College of Behavioral and Health Sciences. Her work with the University of the South includes numerous projects, including the renovation and expansion of Biehl Commons, renovations for the School of Theology and Cannon Residence Hall, and new buildings for The Wellness Commons, Bookstore, Ayres and Smith Residence Halls. She’s also led projects with Rutherford County Schools and Metro Nashville Public Schools.

Notably, Maddox has played a key role in the Cayce Transformation, Nashville’s largest subsidized housing property, with the Metropolitan Development and Housing Agency. The Cayce Transformation master plan involves replacing aging housing with new affordable and market-rate housing, and adding in greenspace throughout the development – including the protection of multiple mature trees, which was the inspiration for the naming of the Cherry Oak Apartments. She also served on the project team for the redevelopment of the John C. Tune Airport following the March 2020 tornado, and on the new 253,600 sq. ft. Tennessee State Library and Archives facility. She earned her B.S. in Civil Engineering from Vanderbilt University.

Woodson has more than a decade of experience leading civil design for high-profile projects in Middle Tennessee. His ability to navigate complex urban sites has made him a trusted partner to developers and architects. During his seven years at BCA, he has directed numerous large-scale mixed-use and urban infill projects including Asurion Gulch Hub Headquarters, a 551,000-square-foot, mixed-use complex connecting The Gulch and Capital View neighborhoods, and the Peabody Union mixed-use development, with office, retail and restaurant, multi-family housing and a connector to the Cumberland River Greenway.

Several of Woodson’s notable projects are on behalf of AJ Capital, including the 15.5-acre mixed-use Belle Meade Village. Additional AJ Capital projects include Wedgewood Village, Chestnut Street Mixed-Use, Nashville Warehouse Co., Pastis Restaurant and Chief’s Honky Tonk. In addition to his local experience, Woodson lived and worked overseas with Engineering Ministries International, serving projects in Cairo, Egypt, and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He earned his B.S. in Civil Engineering from Auburn University.

Ellenberger brings 29 years of experience, including 23 years with BCA, where he has established a strong specialty in higher education and athletics projects. His expertise in sports field design and turf systems is reflected in projects completed for the University of Notre Dame, Vanderbilt University, and Duke University. He recently delivered the MTSU Student Athlete Performance Center and is currently leading multiple projects at Tennessee State University. His largest and most high-profile work includes GEODIS Park. In addition to the stadium itself, he oversaw infrastructure improvements, park development, fairgrounds enhancements, and adjacent mixed-use components. Ellenberger holds a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Purdue University.

The firm currently has 31 employees, including 10 licensed Professional Engineers, and is recognized by industry peers for its collaborative approach, thoughtful urban development with an emphasis on connectivity and walkability, and its ability to implement creative solutions for incredibly tough sites while successfully navigating these challenges through regulatory and review processes. Its portfolio spans more than 7,000 projects across Middle Tennessee, including GEODIS Park, Hill Center Green Hills, Vanderbilt University’s West End Neighborhood, the Tennessee State Library and Archives, and Austin Peay State University’s Health Professions Building.
