Courthouse Recognized for Outstanding Craftsmanship

CHICAGO, Ill.—The new Spartanburg County (S.C.) Courthouse was honored with the 2025 PCI Sidney Freedman Craftsmanship Award. The award recognizes PCI-certified plants for unique solutions and excellence in manufacturing and craftsmanship of architectural precast concrete and glass-fiber-reinforced concrete structures and components. The structure, featuring an architectural precast concrete façade designed to resemble marble, demonstrates how precast concrete can elevate any project.

Tindall Corporation’s South Carolina Division manufactured the winning project’s precast concrete. The project used more than 1,000 precast concrete components, including columns with Romanesque-patterned bases and capitals; five styles of cornices with monolithic corner cornice pieces ranging from 3 ft. to 10 ft., 10.5 in. and weighing 25,000 to 40,000 pounds each; and architectural wall panels with projecting window surrounds averaging 12 ft. wide and weighing about 15,000 pounds each.

“This is the most detailed architectural project that I’ve been a part of, requiring months of careful planning and collaboration across all departments,” said Brian Mills, plant manager of Tindall’s South Carolina Division. Chuck Thorne, senior project manager, added, “The success of this project’s architectural complexity and magnitude was a culmination of a concerted, dedicated effort from all members of the Tindall team, from sales, engineering, QC, production, field operations, to the final field finishing of the structure.”

“When I think of craftsmanship, it looks exactly like the Spartanburg County Courthouse,” said Hunter Heinrich, business development manager at Enterprise Precast Concrete in Corsicana, Texas, who served as a judge. “The consistency, detailing, transitions, engineering, precision, and artistry place it above its competitors.”
