It’s a very good year for contractors to partner with government

by Mary Scott Nabers Public officials at the local government level are initiating large, innovative, and forward-thinking projects aimed at enhancing economic prosperity in various regions of the country over the next few decades. Many of the projects are funded by federal programs, with billions yet to be allocated before the end of 2026 unless the programs are reauthorized—which may or may not happen. Illinois is set to embark on a groundbreaking and historic initiative with the establishment of a new quantum computing facility on the former U.S. Steel South Works site. This unique project, which includes the construction of a cryogenic facility that will house the world’s first industrial-use quantum computer, is estimated to cost $9 billion and is backed by a diverse group of supporters, including the state of Illinois, the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and Chicago’s housing, Cook County and economic development organization. Bridging the Gap in NDT-E Deck Inspection

By SHANE D. BOONE, Ph.D., Chair of ASNT Research Council Infrastructure Committee For generations, bridges have served to link communities across the country. They carry hundreds of millions of people over rivers, railroads, and valleys to their work, school, home, and other important destinations.  In addition, the US transportation infrastructure, particularly highways and associated bridges, carry the goods and services needed for our society to properly function. Bridges are a critical part of the nation’s infrastructure, worthy of our attention and preservation efforts. Approximately 2.7% of the bridges in the United States have been classified as fracture critical as they have nonredundant elements that are susceptible to an increased risk of failure. This threat highlights an urgent need to inspect and preserve older bridges and associated infrastructure.  Specifically, nonredundant and associated fracture critical bridges may be susceptible to sudden collapse due to vessel im

The Future of Scheduling

صورة
By Garrett Harley, Product Marketing Director, Oracle Construction & Engineering As the world pivots into a new, AI-powered future, many industries are changing rapidly to accommodate new tools and new capabilities. The construction industry, in particular, is beginning to see a change in the culturally entrenched attitudes towards project management as organizations look to modernize their operations. One long-entrenched process—creating the schedule—is an area that has long been in need of a makeover. The schedule is the beating heart of every project, providing the road map that every team member will base their work around. It has traditionally been the expertise of a single scheduler that dictates the quality of the schedule, but now organizations can use AI-powered scheduling tools that can unite the entire team’s data to generate an all-encompassing first draft to make that scheduler’s life easier. Connecting the office and the field Today, a schedule needs to be mult

How a Living Shoreline Is Protecting a Vital Infrastructure Asset

صورة
By giving nature a helping hand, a landmark restoration project is creating a more resilient coastline barrier for a highway along northwestern Florida’s Apalachicola Bay.   For years, chronic erosion and severe storms have caused substantial damage to a key six-mile coastal stretch of US Route 98 along Florida’s panhandle. Road repairs and concrete barriers after these events only provided a temporary fix to the problem. To break the cycle and find a more permanent solution, the Apalachee Regional Planning Council, together with environmental organizations, looked past the coastline and found that the innovative and sustainable answer might be in the waters of Apalachicola Bay.  The result of that effort is the Franklin-98 Project, which involves the development of a “living shoreline” that protects the coastal edge through the use of enhanced habitat—like oyster reefs and salt marsh—to help stabilize the shoreline. September marks the one-year anniversary of the completion of the

The Tri-State Drilling Story: ROI That Protects the Future

The company’s exceptional reputation and expertise had provided unrelenting growth over the years, but outdated processes and a lack of real-time visibility to job costs created an environment that was constantly looking backward instead of planning ahead. Adam VanGrinsven, Tri-State Drilling’s Chief Financial Officer, recognized the challenges of keeping the business on track and on budget. The company’s leadership decided that HCSS would be the one platform that could help them forecast accurately, track change orders, and receive real-time insights into job health and productivity. Getting everyone aligned internally “Most of the time we worked through phone calls to get updates, and we relied heavily on manual calculations and ma
