New ASCE Manual of Practice 155 Provides Guidance on Direct Pipe Installations

Reston, Va. – ASCE’s Manual of Practice, Direct Steerable Pipe Thrusting, MOP 155, details how engineers and construction professionals can utilize the Direct Steerable Pipe Thrusting (DSPT) method to design and install pipelines. Known as Direct Pipe, this recent innovation in the trenchless pipeline installation industry, combines characteristics of horizontal directional drilling (HDD) and conventional microtunneling to design and install pipelines in ground conditions that would be challenging for other trenchless methods.  The purpose of this manual is to provide stakeholders with general information, and design and construction guidance for the DSPT installation. Divided into eight chapters, the book begins with the history of DSPT, delves into methods, planning, site investigation, and design, with contract documents and construction considerations covered at the end.   MOP 155 serves as a contribution to the DSPT engineering practice to benefit engineers, owners, contractors

KENTUCKY DAM REHABILITATION CITED IN NATIONAL ENGINEERING COMPETITION

Schnabel Engineering of Greensboro, N.C., has earned a National Recognition Award for exemplary engineering achievement in the American Council of Engineering Companies’ (ACEC) 56 th  annual Engineering Excellence Awards (EEA) for the Bullock Pen Lake Dam Rehabilitation Project in Crittenden, Ky. Decades of erosion along the dam’s elevated rock spillway made the project the top priority of state’s dam repair program. Schnabel’s rehabilitation strategy included construction of a 12.5-cycle, 260-foot-wide, reinforced concrete labyrinth spillway over the dam embankment, including a reinforced concrete stepped chute and stilling basin. This passive labyrinth spillway system was sized to pass precipitation from the most intense storms without overtopping the dam, while also meeting upstream and downstream flooding goals. Other modifications included leveling the top of dam, pressure grouting the rock foundation in the existing spillway, installation of a permanent siphon to replace the ex

Transformative Main Street Station Shed in Richmond, Va. Lauded as Shining Infrastructure Example

A 40-year phased multimodal development project that recently earned a historic preservation award today was showcased by the national Engineering and Public Works Roadshow as a great example of how infrastructure investment can improve a community and spark economic growth. The Main Street Station Shed won an American Public Works Association project of the year  award  in 2022. Its rebirth brought Amtrak back to Richmond in 2003 and promises to link the most populated rail corridor in the country, the Northeast corridor, to the fastest-growing rail corridor in the country, the Southeast Rail Corridor. The Engineering and Public Works Roadshow is the first time the leading organizations representing the designers and public operators of America’s infrastructure have joined together to shine a spotlight on what successful infrastructure investment means for the nation’s economy, jobs, the environment, and our future.  The Roadshow is a joint project of the  American Council of Engin

Rhino Shield best for guarding against waterfront environmental impacts

صورة
Everyone loves the waterfront — the ocean and sunshine and sweet salty breeze can soothe the soul. But these elements can mean high maintenance to a building’s exterior and a painting cycle that’s on repeat every 3 to 5 years. On the coast, painted walls tend to fade faster, are pummeled with wind-driven rain, are exposed to salt around the clock and are breeding grounds for bio-growth like algae and fungus. One 7-story Destin, Florida resort nestled between Choctawhatchee Bay and the Gulf of Mexico was looking for a fresh update but wanted more longevity for their money. Mike Moore, AmCoat’s Director of Products and Applications, said Destin West Beach and Bay Resort opted for Rhino Shield coatings to protect its structure with a beautiful tropical color scheme. “Destin West wanted to extend their maintenance cycle for coating their exterior walls,” said Moore. “They sought out Rhino Shield because they knew that they could go longer between coatings and that our product has built

Common Ground Alliance Announces “50 in 5” Industry Challenge to Cut Damages to Buried Utilities in Half by 2028

Common Ground Alliance (CGA) , the national nonprofit trade association dedicated to protecting underground utility lines, people who dig near them and their communities, today issued its “50 in 5” industry challenge to stakeholders with a goal of reducing damages to critical underground utilities by 50% in five years. According to CGA’s Damage Information Reporting Tool (DIRT) Report, the annual rate of damages to buried infrastructure in the U.S. has remained stagnant for most of the last decade and costs the U.S. a staggering $30 billion every year. Each of the hundreds of thousands of dig-ins to underground utilities that occurs annually has the potential to cripple communities and businesses by cutting them off from critical services, cause injury or even loss of life. CGA’s “50 in 5” challenge aims to address damages to our Nation’s critical assets head-on by bringing damage prevention advocates together around a targeted set of strategic, data-driven priorities. The “50 in 5”
