CINTEC NORTH AMERICA ANNOUNCES RESTORATION AND ANCHORING WORK ON MASSEY HALL, FAMED CANADIAN CONCERT VENUE

صورة
Cintec North America announces its reinforcement anchors offer stability and support during the revitalization of Canada’s most renowned concert venue, Massey Hall. As Massey Hall marks its 125th anniversary, a century and a quarter of Canadian history has been stripped bare to be massively restored, not only to recapture the hall’s original sound, but to make sure it will serve audiences for generations to come. This restoration project is proudly supported by Cintec’s anchors. Cintec reinforcement anchors can stabilize and strengthen an unreinforced masonry structure without the need for external and internal steel bracing, making them ideal for historical buildings, masonry bridges, monument repair, high rise buildings, retaining walls and harbor walls. Cintec reinforcement anchors also withstand freeze-thaw cycles without shrinkage or loss of strength, limiting the threat of Toronto, Ontario weather to the historic structure. Engineering the next generation

صورة
Improving processes and unlocking future innovations relies on new ideas. Many of the engineers of tomorrow who will deliver these breakthroughs are currently learning their craft at university. However, students at Fontys University of Applied Sciences are already making a difference in the world of engineering thanks to an initiative set up by Sulzer’s Venlo Service Center. Designed to teach the Taguchi method, students have collaborated with engineers at the service center to help improve the quality control process for gas turbine coating samples, gaining valuable real-world experience. Students collaborated with engineers at the Venlo service center to help improve the quality control process for gas turbine coating samples, gaining valuable real-world experience Nicky Janssen and Jill Vloet, both studying Industrial Product Design, learnt invaluable skills from the practical learning Paul Thommassen, Process Engineer at Sulzer, presented to the students to learn t...

Aussie invention set to make the world safer

The heroism of entering a burning building is amplified by the fact that, at any moment, it could collapse. During evacuations and rescue missions, every second counts. Imagine if we improved monitoring systems – for mines, bridges, towers – to gauge hazards more precisely. How many lives could be saved? University of Adelaide researcher  Dr Noune Melkoumian  has invented an innovative structural health monitoring (SHM) system for this exact purpose – and she’s about to take her sensor technology global. In 1988, Armenia witnessed one of the most destructive earthquakes in human history. The shock tore through cities, distorting structures and reducing others to rubble. “After the earthquake, we didn’t know if the remaining buildings were safe or not,” Noune recounts. “With this early-warning technology, we could have known where to shelter survivors.” As an engineering academic in Adelaide, Noune teamed up with an earthquake expert to test her unique prototype. The senso...

Port of Long Beach Cargo Volume Eases in November

Trade moving through the Port of Long Beach softened in November amid reduced orders from retailers, full warehouses, vessel transfers between the San Pedro Bay ports and goods shifted toward seaports along the East and Gulf coasts. Dockworkers and terminal operators moved 588,742 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) last month, down 21% from November 2021. Imports slid 28.4% to 259,442 TEUs, while exports increased 13.8% to 124,988 TEUs. Empty containers moving through the Port decreased 25.2% to 204,313 TEUs. “While some import volume has shifted to other gateways, we are confident that a good portion of it will return to the San Pedro Bay,” said Port of Long Beach Executive Director Mario Cordero. “As we move toward normalization of the supply chain, it’s time to refocus our efforts on engaging in sustainable and transformative operations that will secure our place as a leader in trans-Pacific trade.” “We appreciate the exceptional work of the dockworkers who moved containers off ...

Download New SFPE Foundation-Funded Research on Water Supply and Climate Change

The SFPE Foundation, a charitable organization focused on enhancing the scientific understanding of fire and its interaction with the natural and built environment, is pleased to announce the completion and availability of a research report on water supply, climate change, and the impact of water stress on fire protection systems. The research was conducted by Virginia R. Charter, Ph.D., P.E., FSFPE and Justin Paul Fletcher of Oklahoma State University, and is available for free download at  sfpe.org/foundation .  Water-based fire protection systems rely almost entirely on having an adequate water supply to aid in control or suppression of fire; plus, local fire departments also rely on the water supply as a part of their response. This research involved a detailed review of current water supply practices, design of suppression systems that depend upon the use of water supplies, and the impacts of water stress or scarcity on water supply systems. Additionally, the report incl...

ERGODYNE URGES MILLIONS OF AT-RISK WORKERS TO “CHECK YOUR HEAD” WITH LAUNCH OF NEW ABOVE-THE-SHOULDERS PROTECTIVE GEAR

صورة
Don’t put your neck on the line without protecting what’s above it. That’s the advice from workplace safety advocate Ergodyne as they announced their latest salvo in the battle against the so-called “above-the-shoulders” injuries threatening millions of workers annually—including brain trauma, eye injuries, and the approximately 22 million U.S. workers currently exposed to hazardous occupational noise each year. “Hearing damage is particularly insidious,” said Tim Gallant, the product director charged with leading the St. Paul, MN-based work gear manufacturer’s latest offering of personal protective equipment (PPE). “Workers get acclimated to it (noise), and it does its damage over time,” said Gallant. Ergodyne’s Hard Hat Mounted Earmuffs are the work safety leader’s first foray into hearing protection and are part of a suite of new solutions aimed at protecting the eyes, ears and brains of a worksite: Eye and Face Protection Skullerz ®  DELLENGER Safety Glasses Feature adju...

Evercam’s new 4D View, powered by iTwin, improves collaboration with easier access to real-time videos and project design data

Evercam is pleased to announce the addition of Evercam 4D View to Bentley Systems’ powered by iTwin program. Evercam 4D View helps project teams leverage engineering and design data to better understand the construction sequence and communicate project plans to all parties involved. The 4D View app combines real-time, high-quality video footage throughout the jobsite with a digital twin and allows users to switch between the model and reality to track changes and communicate progress. The app addresses the challenge of the volume of data available to project teams by connecting it with 4D planning, scheduling and analysis capabilities. It is no secret that the construction industry has famously low levels of productivity, and while BIM has significantly contributed to the improvement of communications, the industry is still hindered by the inaccessibility of project data. Often, a BIM model is only accessible to a limited amount of the project team. Evercam 4D View democratises this ...
