Guidance on Building for Physical Security Provided in New ASCE Manual of Practice 142

Reston, Va. – Evolving threats from bombings, civil disturbances, biological attacks, and other malevolent events have raised the importance of physical security at buildings of all types, from traditional municipal buildings to “soft” targets like cultural venues and stadiums. ASCE’s new book, Structural Design for Physical Security , MOP 142, provides an overview of the typical design considerations encountered in new construction and renovation of facilities for physical security. Editors, Van Eepoel and Gallant, note that “the constant evolution in aggressor profile, threat tactics, and types, combined with advances in the field of mitigation strategies, were the driving force behind this manual of practice, developed as a guide for protective design professionals.” This book serves as a replacement for the 1999 technical report Structural Design for Physical Security: State of the Practice and is intended to provide a roadmap for designers and engineers involved in physical

Old Power Stations Become Fabulous Green Assets, Reveals IDTechEx

Power stations are usually ugly. In addition, coal, oil , and gas power stations are turning out to be expensive write – offs for power companies, particularly facilities that are not very old. The new IDTechEx report, “ Stationary Energy Storage Without Batteries: Grid, Microgrid, UPS, Trackside 2021-2041 ” has the answer – repurposing as energy storage. Raghu Das, CEO of analyst firm IDTechEx explains, “We all know that renewables increase intermittency so we need more and more energy storage – delayed electricity. Cost reduction of solar generation is the fastest and its increasing share means two problems – dead at night, feeble in winter. W ind power can be dead for weeks in some regions and that only adds to the problem. Lithium-ion batteries currently favored for stationary storage self-leak over weeks let alone seasons and they are not the easiest to scale to GW levels or improve to 20 – year life, easy recycling or even best safety .” That leaves other forms

Predicting the spread of invasive carp using river water flows

صورة
University of Missouri engineers are partnering with the U.S. Geological Survey to better understand how to stop invasive carp from damaging both the economy and the environment. For more than two decades, Duane Chapman, a fish biologist with the United States Geological Survey (USGS), has been chasing the spread of invasive carp, a family of fish originally from Europe and Asia, which individually are known as bighead carp, black carp, grass carp and silver carp. After their introduction to the U.S. in the 1970s by way of aquatic farms, they escaped into the Mississippi River and began to reproduce, causing widespread economic and environmental damage as they out-competed native fish populations for food and other resources. Now, Chapman and his colleague Robert Jacobson, a research hydrologist from the USGS Columbia Environmental Research Center, are partnering with University of Missouri researchers to use an approximately $200,000 grant from the USGS Aquatic Invasive Species Comp
