LAND & WATER STARTS EMERGENCY WORKS AT DONCASTER ON BEHALF OF THE ENVIRONMENT AGENCY AND BAM NUTTALL

Emergency works are currently being undertaken by leading wet civil engineering firm Land & Water, on the River Don in Doncaster, to repair a large slip on an embankment on behalf of BAM Nuttall and the Environment Agency. The works which commenced this week will see Land & Water use a 100tonne crane  and 17tonne long reach excavator, mounted on to a pontoon from the adjacent Sheffield and South Yorkshire Canal, to carry out sheet piling to the toe of the river embankment. The reach of this machinery makes it an ideal solution for the task which will also see the civil engineering firm dig out in front of and behind the piles, using the crane and grab, to bench in the failed slope section by section, placing rip rap stone to protect the bank. Discussing the works, Land & Water’s Project Manager Charlie Oakes says: “This is such an interesting project for Land & Water as it allows us to use our capabilities and specialist plant to safeguard the river’s embankment and p

From Toxic Ions to Single-Atom Copper

A More Efficient, Safer Alternative to Sourcing Copper Via Bacteria HOUSTON- Copper remains one of the single most ubiquitous metals in everyday life. As a conductor of heat and electricity, it is utilized in wires, roofing and plumbing, as well as a catalyst for petrochemical plants, solar and electrical conductors and for a wide range of energy related applications. Subsequently, any method to harvest more of the valuable commodity proves a useful endeavor. Debora Rodrigues, Ezekiel Cullen Professor of Engineering at the University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering, in collaboration with Francisco C. Robles Hernandez, professor at the UH College of Technology and Ellen Aquino Perpetuo, professor at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil offered conclusive research for understanding how bacteria found in copper mines convert toxic copper ions to stable single-atom copper. In their co-authored  paper , “Copper Mining Bacteria: Converting toxic copper ions into a stable single at

Strand Jacks Efficiently Lower Over 100 Irregular Loads at Texas Bridge Project

VALPARAISO, IN — To construct the three v-pier bridges that comprise the Panther Island Bridges in Fort Worth, Texas Sterling Construction Company needed an enormous falsework structure composed of large steel beams, pipe, timbers and wood. Erecting the form with conventional cranes was not a problem, however, removing the structure once the concrete was poured and hardened presented a challenge. The completed bridge did not allow access to the falsework with a traditional crane. In addition, a key concern was the anticipated variation of the loads both in shape and weight.  Each section of falsework weighed roughly 70 tons but due to structural variations, an individual lifting point might equal three tons at one point and 15 tons at another.  What could provide the required lifting capacity and control the uneven loads in the limited footprint? Texas Sterling called upon the heavy lifting experts at Engineered Rigging for a solution. Drawing upon their recent experience working on

Test range for UAV-based geophysical sensors launched in Latvia

Riga, Latvia – SPH Engineering announces the official launch of its in-house drone flight area, enriched with a unique 450×70 meter range for various types of geophysical sensor testing with UAVs. The purpose-built testing ground features multiple targets of different materials and sizes buried in a variety of soil types. SPH Engineering’s test range is designed for manufacturers, surveying and scientific teams for equipment testing and various experiments. The four distinct seasons in Latvia provide the opportunity to test the technologies in a wide range of conditions: dry soil in summer, wet to extremely muddy in spring/autumn, and frozen in winter. Dozens of real-life application scenarios for geological sensors were taken into account to design the testing area. There are 23 permanently installed targets (pipes, barrels, etc.) buried in natural soil (layers from sand to clay) to inspect. The coordinates of the targets are known with cm-level precision to ensure the highest possi

ROHM Introduces New White Chip LEDs: High Luminous Intensity, Class-Leading Small 1608 Size

Improved ultra-compact design for greater space savings in battery-driven IoT equipment and drones Santa Clara, CA and Kyoto, Japan (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) —  ROHM  Semiconductor today introduced their new  CSL1104WB  ultra-compact, high luminous intensity white chip LEDs. The products are optimized for applications requiring high brightness white light emission, such as IoT devices, drones, and other battery-equipped applications. In recent years, high luminous intensity (2.0cd) white LEDs have been increasingly adopted to improve visibility in a range of applications in the consumer electronics and automotive sectors. At the same time, the emergence of applications that mount multiple LEDs in a small space – such as IoT devices and drones – require high density mounting. This makes it difficult to achieve high brightness in a compact footprint. High brightness in an ultra-compact size improves design flexibility The CSL1104WB series achieves a high luminous intensity of 2.0cd in an ultr
