Acrow , a leading international bridge engineering and supply company, reported today one of its modular steel bridges, installed at the junction of Autoroutes 520 and 13 in Montréal, is providing access for relocated utilities during the project to reconstruct the Autoroute 520 overpass. Autoroute 13 is a major north-south freeway in the Montréal urban region and the main link to Ville de Laval, the third-largest city in the province. At the interchange with Autoroute 520, the six-lane route is heavily traveled, making a rapid installation of the temporary structure a priority and Acrow’s modular steel structure an ideal solution. The Rhode Island Department of Transportation recently approved the National Precast Concrete Association’s Plant Certification program as an accepted quality certification option for manufactured precast concrete facilities in the state.  Rhode Island joins 40 other states and more than 75 municipalities in recognizing NPCA certification when specifying construction projects.  NPCA’s Plant Certification program is dedicated to increasing the quality of precast concrete products and assisting specifiers in obtaining these products. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers this year outlined its intention to increase the beneficial use of dredge material. Water injection dredging, a technique commonly used in Europe, offers one way to meet these new goals. HDR Senior Dredging Engineer Joe Wagner, P.E., D.NE, BCEE, helped the only U.S. port to use this method so far and has been a leading proponent of its effectiveness. In the latest of HDR’s Experts Talk series, Wagner explains the technique, how to determine whether it’s a good fit for a port and where it’s been used.
