PHILADELPHIA   Middle school and high school-age girls from the Philadelphia area will attend a complimentary in-person construction camp this summer to provide real-world experience, mentorship, and education about the opportunities that exist in the construction industry, regardless of gender. The camp is called  MyWIC , which stands for Mentoring young Women In Construction, and will take place two days per week in Philadelphia between July 12 and Aug. 17, 2021. MyWIC is run by the NAWIC Philadelphia Foundation, which partnered with companies like  NEST , a leading national facilities management company to make it a reality. “Many girls are unaware that a career in construction can be extremely fun and financially rewarding,” said Mary Gaffney, NAWIC Phila. New research is showing that some tiny catalysts being considered for industrial-scaled environmental remediation efforts may be unstable during operation. Chemists from the University of Waterloo studied the structures of complex catalysts known as “nanoscale electrocatalysts” and found that they are not as stable as scientists once thought. When electricity flows through them during use, the atoms may rearrange. In some cases, the researchers found, electrocatalysts degrade completely.  Understanding why and how this rearrangement and degradation happens is the first step to using these nanoscale electrocatalysts in environmental remediation efforts such as removing atmospheric carbon dioxide and groundwater contaminants and transforming them into higher-value products such as fuels. “Current electrocatalysts rely on complex nanoscale structures in order to optimize their efficiency,” said Anna Klinkova, a professor in Waterloo’s Department of Chemistry. “What we found, however, i

Latest electric vehicle charging station adds 26 chargers in high-traffic area Pasadena, CA  As the demand for electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure continues to grow, global design and engineering firm Stantec is helping to bring another charging plaza to the City of Pasadena, California. Following the May 2020 launch of the Marengo Charging Plaza , one of the largest public fast-charging stations in the nation, the new Arroyo Parkway Charging Depot will be located on the southwest corner of East Glenarm Street and the beginning of the 110 Freeway in Pasadena. The Arroyo Charging Plaza will include fast-charging stations owned by the City and by Tesla, bringing approximately 26 additional chargers to the area. Stantec will assist with the design of the DC Fast Chargers, which serve all EV types. “Fast” chargers are high-power EV chargers that minimize charging time, getting drivers back on the road with at least an 80% charge in approximately 30 minutes or less.
