Lawrence Group-Designed Springfield Clinic Offers Elements of Discovery, Positive Distraction to Ease Children’s Fears of Visiting the Pediatrician

صورة
St. Louis, MO – For many children, a trip to the doctor can be anxiety-inducing or even downright scary. Pediatricians’ offices have long tried to combat that fear by creating a softer and more child-friendly environment with toys, games and colorful décor, but what if the building itself was designed from the ground-up to directly address and distract from children’s anxiety — starting from the moment they pull into the parking lot? This was the concept behind Lawrence Group’s design of the new $23 million Springfield Clinic pediatric center in Springfield, IL – a 41,500-square-foot facility consolidating multiple pediatric practices across Springfield under one roof, including general pediatrics, dermatology, lab and radiology services. The facility officially welcomed its first patients on Oct. 16, 2023. The general contractor on the project was O’Shea Builders of Springfield, IL. The project came to the design team through a longstanding relationship between one of Lawrence G

Symbolic railway bridge replaced with world-first network arch bridge

صورة
Smart solution for moving the complete structure saves time and minimizes disruption Built more than 100 years ago, and connecting Western and Eastern Europe, the Oder Bridge on the German-Polish border in Küstrin has since been seen as a symbol of Europe coming together. Over time, as bridges get used by heavy transport, they need replacing, and for such a historic railway bridge a special replacement was designed which was to be carried out with minimal disruption to the rail network. The new Oder Bridge is an innovation – a network arch bridge with carbon hangers: its sleek, light and soft design, a fitting symbol of innovation, openness and connection.  The 2,100t, 180m long bridge will help to increase line capacity and shorten travel times by allowing a maximum permissible speed of 120km/h. Mammoet has plenty of experience in large-scale bridge launches, and the specialist heavy-lift equipment to move them as complete structures. This allows parallel work in the preparation

Crafting Clarity

From The Zweig Letter By Jeremy Clarke , Director of Executive Search & Recruitment, Zweig Group Job descriptions need radical simplification for authenticity, brevity, and impact in attracting top talent. The saying “familiarity breeds contempt” is certainly true, but I’d like to offer an additional dimension to that old line for the purpose of this article: “Familiarity breeds complacency.” Which is to say, what is familiar to us breeds laziness into us. I don’t mind telling you, I think we as human beings prefer familiarity for that very reason. We seem content doing what is familiar to us with mindless repetition no matter how unfruitful it may be because that is far more palatable to us than the hard work of really thinking through something critically, of really innovating, and of exploring something new and exciting and edgy. If that’s your vibe, so be it – but it goes without saying that complacency, laziness, and mindless repetition are the secret ingredients that will

Buried Civil 3D tools: Surface Working Plane

By Leo Lavayen, Civil Applications Expert Civil 3D installs with many tools that are not loaded by default, some of these can be found in the Program Files directory:  C:\Program Files\Autodesk\AutoCAD 2024\C3D\Sample\Civil 3D API . In that directory many subfolders can be found with fun tools.  Let explore ONE of the many hidden treasures: Surface Working Plane .  It is an incredible tool that make creating simple temporary planer surfaces easy. I worked with the technical guy that helped in the creation of a grading routine over a decade ago that Autodesk then added to Civil 3D base installation.  I forgot when it started shipping with the software base installation, but glad it is still there. SECTION 1:  LOADING THE TOOLS: First step is loading the tools.  Start the APPLOAD command and browse to the installation folder, select and load the tool.  The path is to the Program Files directory, shown below it the path for 2024:  C:\Program Files\Autodesk\AutoCAD 2024\C3D\Sample\Ci

Supporting Resiliency with Optimized Metal Building Systems

Through hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, floods, heatwaves and wildfires, climate change-driven disasters continue to bombard the country. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Centers for Environmental Information reported that 18 events in 2022 caused 474 direct/indirect fatalities, and at least $165 billion in damage. With increasing urgency, building owners, architects and contractors are turning to metal buildings to deliver resilient, robust and safe buildings to better mitigate risk. “In the aftermath of a disaster, a building’s resilience can be understood, not just from its ability to endure a disaster with minimal structural damage, but truly be quickly repaired as needed, and put back into service,” explains Eric F. Pros, AIA, MBA, CPD Director of Design, DS Architecture, Cleveland. Metal buildings fit the bill as an exceedingly strong, sturdy and durable building system which can be customized and fortified by the design and construction of
