Smithfield Middle School, North Richland Hills, Texas

In Texas, hurricanes and dangerous storms are a constant threat. To mitigate these risks and keep the community’s most vulnerable citizens safe, Smithfield Middle School in North Richland Hills wanted to build a larger storm shelter that would provide a safe space for students, faculty, and the community. Thanks to a bond package passed in 2018, all independent school district campuses in the area received funding to build shelters, and the designers of this shelter knew early on that precast concrete was the best choice. “Immense wind and debris loads associated with storm shelters create unique structural design challenges,” notes Nick Heinlen, project engineer for Dunaway Associates. “Selecting a structural system requires a balance of many factors, especially for a gymnasium where uninterrupted clear space is critical.” Precast concrete would give them the highly resilient structure they needed within the prescribed budget, and it would create minimal site disruption while the sch

Boston College Recreation Center, Chestnut Hill, Mass.

Boston College’s new precast concrete recreation center is helping to redefine the academic institution’s culture of fitness and recreation. The 245,000-ft² facility houses a fitness center, rock-climbing wall, jogging track, aquatics center, sport courts, yoga studios, and more. It will provide students with a one-stop destination for all of their fitness needs. To create the space, designers needed a material that could support vast, open recreation areas on multiple floors and withstand the constant drum of running feet, dribbling balls, and other high-intensity sports. Precast concrete was the obvious choice. “The structure had to span long distances over a swimming pool and basketball court while still providing adequate support to control the vibration from human foot traffic and activities within the building,” explains Todd Haley, associate project manager for Unistress Corporation. “The additional benefit of precast concrete on this project was the ability to satisfy all of the

Modular Steel Bridge from Acrow Provides Temporary Replacement for Collapsed Span in Northern Italy

Rapid response and installation minimize traffic and economic impacts  Parsippany, New Jersey –  Acrow , a leading international bridge engineering and supply company, noted it has supplied a temporary modular bridge to enable the passage of vehicles during the rehabilitation of Ponte Lenzino in the Trebbia River Valley in northern Italy. Located in the Apennine Mountains, the region is an extremely popular year-round tourist destination known for its natural beauty and rich cultural history. Near the small town of Bobbio, Ponte Lenzino carries traffic over the Trebbia River on national roadway S.S.45. Built in the late 1800s, the masonry bridge has undergone numerous structural adjustments, but in October 2020, heavy flooding caused the collapse of the intermediate pier and the two inner spans, resulting in an immediate impact to traffic, which was forced to take a 15 km detour through mountainous roads. The long detour was of particular concern during the global pandemic, as it res

University of Missouri engineers are working with Dow and the Missouri Department of Transportation to test the use of plastic waste in road pavement mixtures. Each year in the United States, millions of tons of plastic waste are discarded and not recycled, leading to serious environmental problems. In an effort to help keep this waste from ending up in the environment, engineers at the University of Missouri are partnering with Dow and the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) to test mixing plastic waste into the asphalt pavement mixtures for possible use on American roadways and bridges. Asphalt pavement mixtures are typically created from a mixture of asphalt and other materials called “aggregates,” such as stone, sand or gravel, said Bill Buttlar, the Glen Barton Chair in Flexible Pavements in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. He said the chemical makeup of plastic helps it become a good product for road pavement mixtures. “Plastic was developed to
