Building a Better Bulb

UH Researchers’ New Prototype LED Lightbulb Emits Less of That Troublesome Blue Light HOUSTON— LED lightbulbs offer considerable advantages over other types of lighting. Being more efficient, they require much less electricity to operate. They do not give off unwanted heat the way old-school incandescent bulbs do, and the best of them long outlast even fluorescent lightbulbs. But LEDs are not problem-free. Questions linger over suspected links between health concerns such as fatigue, mood disorders, and insomnia from overexposure to the blue-tinted light produced by today’s standard LED bulbs. Plus, higher prices can prompt lightbulb shoppers to weigh other options. A University of Houston research team led by Jakoah Brgoch, associate professor of chemistry in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and principal investigator in the Texas Center for Superconductivity, is developing an LED bulb that emits most of its energy from the safer violet segment of the visible light

National Ground Water Association to Highlight Vapor Intrusion Risk Assessment and Research in Special Issue of Groundwater Monitoring & Remediation

Focus issues will feature scientific research on new technological and regulatory advances in vapor intrusion remediation projects (WESTERVILLE, OH)  The National Ground Water Association (NGWA)  announced a focus issue of its research publication  Groundwater Monitoring & Remediation (GWMR)  will be published this month on advances in vapor intrusion risk assessment. Vapor intrusion occurs when vapor-forming chemicals from subsurface sources, such as groundwater, migrate into buildings above the subsurface source. While vapor intrusion was first largely researched as a pathway for radon exposure in the 1980s, vapor-forming chemicals can include many volatile organic compounds such as trichlorethylene and benzene. High levels of exposure to certain chemical vapors may lead to various health issues for those who occupy buildings contaminated through vapor intrusion. The upcoming focus issue of  GWMR,  titled “Advancements in Vapor Intrusion Risk Assessment,” was developed with sp

Inhibiting Corrosion in Vessels Containing Saltwater or Brine: Extend Ballast Tank Life and Minimize Cost Repairs with M-645 Float Coat

Marine environments are extremely aggressive and corrosion protection in these areas requires an especially careful approach. Application of VpCI ® inhibitors in the hydrostatic testing process is of great importance since the test water can be aggressive to pipeline material. The same goes for seawater ballasting of ships. M-645 is a float coat used to inhibit corrosion in vessels containing saltwater or brine. It floats on the surface of the water, forming a self-healing protective film on adjacent metals. The film displaces water containing chlorides from the surface of the vessel. As the water is raised or lowered, M-645 coats every square inch of the vessel’s interior— including ring stiffeners, girders, piping, and side shells—with a sufficient amount of product to protect against corrosion. M-645 is ideal for ballast tanks that are frequently emptied and refilled. Because M-645 floats on the surface of the water, the non-aqueous formula does not contaminate ballast water, allo
